History

The pizzle was originally intended for driving cattle. It was also used for self defense and corporal punishment. [?]

As a corporal punishment instrument, it was known from the antiquity. In the Amorites Hammurabi’s code, from about 1700 BC, you’ll find “202. If any one strike the body of a man higher in rank than he, he shall receive sixty blows with an ox-whip in public” What is called here an ox- whip was a ox’s penis whip.
