What are Sulfiting Agents?
Sulfiting agents or sulfating agents are food additives used for food preservation. They are made from made from sulfites and/or sulfates. Sulfites occur naturally in wines. A sulfate is a salt of sulfuric acid. Both sulfites and sulfates contain a form of sulfur.
In 1986, the Food and Drug Administration in the United States banned the addition of sulfites to all fresh fruit and vegetables that are eaten raw. [1]
